Iligan City Begins Pakanaug Ritual to Honor Saint Michael the Archangel
Iligan City, Philippines – September 20, 2025 – The people of Iligan once again gathered in reverence and celebration for the Pakanaug ritual, a sacred tradition held every 20th of September that signals the start of the 9-day Novena mass in preparation for the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, the city’s patron saint.
The ritual, deeply rooted in Iligan’s heritage, symbolizes devotion and unity among the faithful. It also serves as the cultural and spiritual opening of the Diyandi Festival, Iligan’s grand celebration that blends faith, tradition, and community spirit. This year’s theme, “Panaghiusa sa Kultura, Pagpadayon sa Tradisyon” (“Unity in Culture, Continuity in Tradition”), highlights the enduring importance of preserving Iligan’s religious and cultural identity.
