Mindanao Courts Hyundai for Data Centers and Clean Energy in Korea Investment Mission

Mindanao Positions Itself for Advanced Infrastructure Investments

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), alongside the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte, conducted a strategic site visit to Hyundai Engineering and Construction in Yeouido-dong, Korea, as part of a three-day Mindanao Investment Mission aimed at attracting high-impact investments in data center development and small modular reactor (SMR) technologies.

Led by MinDA Chairperson Secretary Leo Tereso Magno, the mission underscored Mindanao’s readiness for business amid improving peace and security conditions, particularly in the Bangsamoro region. The delegation engaged Hyundai executives in discussions and facility tours highlighting the company’s capabilities in data center construction and SMR manufacturing.

Participants in the engagement included Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib, who serves as an ex-officio member of the MinDA Board as Regional Development Council XI Chair, and MinDA Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro. The delegation was formally welcomed by Hyundai Senior Manager for SMR Cha Dongjun and Chief Manager of the Global Data Center Business Team Kwon Sungyeop.

MinDA emphasized that Mindanao’s strategic location, expanding infrastructure, and supportive investment climate position the region as a strong candidate for Hyundai’s potential expansion in Asia. Governor Jubahib cited the economic growth of key Mindanao regions, particularly the Davao Region, which continues to host major international locators integrated into global value chains.

In parallel, MinDA is advancing initiatives to promote data center development across Mindanao, strengthening the region’s digital infrastructure and disaster response capacity. The exploration of SMR technologies also supports Mindanao’s long-term energy transition strategy toward a balanced energy mix, providing stable baseload power to complement renewable sources such as solar and hydro.

The engagement aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to accelerate investments in energy security and digital infrastructure, reinforcing Mindanao’s contribution to national development objectives and regional competitiveness.

Advancing Mindanao as a Global Investment Hub

By pursuing partnerships in advanced energy and digital infrastructure, Mindanao continues to position itself as a forward-looking, globally connected region ready to support sustainable growth and high-value industries.
