Protecting Iligan Consumers: New Order Strengthens “Bantay Karne” Task Force

Iligan Enforces Stricter Meat Safety Through ‘Bantay Karne’ Task Force

To ensure food safety and consumer protection, Mayor Frederick W. Siao has signed Administrative Order No. 78, series of 2025, officially reconstituting and strengthening the Task Force “Bantay Karne” of Iligan City.

The measure aligns with Republic Act No. 10536 (Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines) and Republic Act No. 7394 (Consumer Act of the Philippines)—laws that safeguard public health by regulating meat production, preservation, and inspection. This move aims to curb the sale of “hot meat” and prevent illegal slaughtering activities from unaccredited establishments.

Ensuring Safe and Lawful Meat Trade in Iligan

The order reiterates that all slaughtering of livestock for commercial or domestic trade—including hogs, cattle, carabaos, and goats—must be performed only at the Iligan City Slaughterhouse, an NMIS-accredited facility under the Economic Enterprise Development and Management Office (EEDMO).

  • Strict Prohibition: Home or backyard slaughtering for commercial purposes is not allowed.
  • Legal Sanctions: Violations of this order are punishable under existing meat inspection and consumer protection laws.
  • Objective: To maintain high standards in meat handling, ensure food security, and protect consumers from health risks caused by uninspected or unsafe meat products.

Mayor Siao emphasized the city’s continuing commitment to uphold public health and strengthen consumer safety, highlighting that this order empowers the Task Force Bantay Karne to act against illegal meat trading and safeguard Iligan’s food supply chain.
